The Liberal Democrats have chosen their new leadership team after making gains in the recent local elections.

Highgate ward councillor Liz Morris has been confirmed as the new leader of the opposition in Haringey, while Alexandra ward’s Josh Dixon will serve as her deputy.

They were elected at the party’s annual general meeting on Wednesday night (May 16).

Cllr Morris, who has represented Highgate since 2014, is a marketing professional and community activist.

During her three years as deputy leader, she campaigned on improved council services, crime and children’s centres, and managed the Lib Dem move to stop the Haringey Development Vehicle going ahead.

Cllr Dixon works for the National Citizen Service, a government-funded programme for 16 to 17-year-olds that seeks to further social mobility, social integration and civic engagement.

He managed the party’s campaign in the run-up to the May 3 elections, which saw the Lib Dems almost double their number of seats on the council.

The Lib Dems’ previous leader, Gail Engert, retired from the council ahead of the elections after 14 years of service.

Cllr Morris said: “We made tremendous advances in this year’s local elections and I am determined to build on them.

“Our Lib Dem Group is talented, diverse and dynamic – and with 15 councillors, we will be an even stronger opposition to the new Momentum-led council.

“We are ready to hold the Labour group to account and provide the residents of Haringey with a positive, liberal alternative.”

Cllr Dixon added: “It is a real honour to be chosen first by voters in Alexandra and now by my Liberal Democrat colleagues. I am looking forward to working with residents and community groups across the borough to deliver more affordable housing and improved local services.”
