Leon Jackson, the self-styled crooner from Scotland, has been crowned the winner of X Factor’s fourth series.
A title quite aptly awarded to the personality-less ‘singer’ if the ‘X’ refers to his standing in the celebrity stakes.
Did he deserve to win the pointless title that bears little relevance to those that will make it in the wonderful world of showbusiness? Well, challenged by a bizarre brother and sister duo too happy to be real and a being called Rhydian who is surely only half human, perhaps. Does that make him good? Ummm no.
Don’t get my wrong, it is addictive viewing, but when will these people realise that if it’s taken a talent show created to exploit the over-indulgent and arrogant world of its creator Simon Cowell to get them noticed, they probably weren’t that good in the first place?
I only need mention the name Steve Brookstein to pay testament to my theory. And it’s hardly like Shane Ward has been the success his prize £1 million recording contract suggested. Ok, so Leona Lewis might have had the taste of success, but the strange admission in her latest song that she bleeds love is probably the most interesting thing to come out of her mouth since she too donned that infamous crown.
But after warbling his way through White Christmas, You Don’t Know Me and a ridiculous duet with Kylie (wonder why she was chosen), Leon surprisingly scooped the top prize. Cue claims of vote-rigging, inability to phone vote and cheating. Cliche.
Talking of another cliche, Leon’s single — a cover of The Prince of Egypt’s When You Believe — was released today and looks set to be Christmas number one.
Well at least the producers got the song choice right if nothing else. With lyrics including: “Who knows what miracles you can achieve. When you believe, somehow you will. You will when you believe” at least he’s being honest .
