Residents who use a key Enfield bus service have mounted a massive campaign to keep it running along its present route.

A total of eight petitions containing 1,000 signatures and 70 separate letters against Transport for London's (TfL) plans to revise the No 377 bus route have been compiled by the Bush Hill Park and Western Enfield residents' associations, who say the route is essential for dozens of people living in Bush Hill Park, who use it as a link to Enfield Town and Oakwood.

Many of the travellers using the No 377 are elderly, or children on their way to and from school.

John Jewson, spokesman for the residents, says that if the route was changed to by-pass Bush Hill Park, many elderly people would simply not leave their homes.

He wants TfL to listen to the association's proposals for the route. He said: "TfL says the bus route is not making money. We think it could if the route was re-jigged to take in a few extra schools and Chase Farm Hospital.

"Then it would be running a better service."

TfL, wants to run the route from Lincoln Road, Enfield, to Southgate Tube station, cutting out streets like Village Road and Wellington Avenue from the service.

A spokeswoman said: "It is not always possible to meet everyone's demands, but we will be taking all views into consideration."

The Bush Hill Park Residents' Association's campaign is quickly gathering pace, and members have received the support of the three Bush Hill Park councillors and Edmonton MP Andy Love and Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes.

Bush Hill Park resident and Federation of Enfield Residents Associations spokesman Tony Kingsnorth will take the letters and petitions to TfL's central London headquarters on Friday, the deadline for objections to the plans.
