Enfield Council has responded to residents' calls for urgent traffic calming measures in a Winchmore Hill street which was the scene of a double fatal accident last month.

The council has already agreed to place two vehicle-activated speeding signs in Old Park Ridings and plans to submit a bid for road safety funding to the Mayor of London.

The move comes after motorcyclist Wayne Nicholls and his wife, pillion passenger, Jackie, died at the junction of Old Park Ridings and Grange Park Avenue, following a collision with a driver under instruction on June 18.

Tracey Doobay, who lives in Grange Park Avenue, had been calling on the council to place speed bumps in the road for years before the tragedy.

She said: "I am scared to let the kids out in the street. I used to live in Edmonton and the installation of speed bumps there totally changed the place for the better. They would certainly be of benefit here."

A spokeswoman for the council said: "The council had recognised there was a problem in Old Park Ridings prior to this fatal accident and has prepared a bid for road safety funding.

"We expect to find out in November if it has been successful. If it has, the scheme will be designed, consulted on and built during 2006 and 2007."

The deaths of Mr and Mrs Nicholls shook the community and prompted friends of Mr Nicholls, who was a professional musician with 1960s tribute band The Rapiers, to organise a benefit concert to raise money for the couple's four orphaned children.

So far, more than £20,000 has been raised for the youngsters.
