The campaign to retain a popular bus service running through Bush Hill Park has won the backing of Enfield Greater London Assembly member Joanne McCartney.

Residents are furious Transport for London (TfL) is considering re-routing the 377 service, cutting out a section used by the elderly and mothers with young children.

Bush Hill Park Residents' Association spokesmen John Jewson and Tony Kingsnorth went to TfL headquarters in central London on Friday to hand in a 1,500-strong petition calling on the body to but the brakes on its plans.

Meanwhile TfL has been bombarded with up to 30 letters a day from individuals opposed to the changes to the route, which runs from Enfield Town through Bush Hill Park to Oakwood.

GLA member Joanne McCartney said: "Large numbers of people will be cut off if the 377 is diverted. Elderly residents rely on the bus to take them to facilities in Enfield such as banks, shops and the post office.

"I hope that by working together we can get London Buses to see sense."

TfL proposed changing the route because it is losing money serving quiet roads such as Wellington Avenue and Trinity Avenue in Bush Hill Park Residents dispute TfL's claim and believe the route could be made more profitable by running it through Chase Farm Hospital, without cutting out Bush Hill Park.

A spokeswoman for TfL said: "We have received 150 individual letters, but consultation has now closed.

"For the next stage we need to review the responses and then to decide what to do next."

She added that owing to the high volume of correspondence, the process would take quite a few weeks'.
