A woman holidaying from India, has been killed in a hit-and-run car smash.

Leelavati Davey, 78, who was visiting family in New Southgate, was one of three passengers in a car being driven by her 24-year-old grandson.

She died after their Ford Fiesta collided with a Lexus at the junction of Forest Road and Woodford New Road in Walthamstow last Tuesday.

The driver of the white Lexus GS300 which had been stolen from the Ilford area earlier in the day, sped away from the scene.

Mrs Davey died in hospital seven hours after the accident. A post mortem revealed she had died as a result of shock and trauma to the abdominal wall.

Mrs Davey's grandson and two other family members, who were also involved in the accident, sustained minor injuries.

A spokesman for the police said Mrs Davey's family were still in shock following her death.

Police have conducted door-to-door inquiries in the area and are now calling for anyone who saw the crash to come forward with information about the Lexus driver.

The missing Lexus driver is described as thin, dark-skinned and in his early 20s. He was 5ft 8ins or 9ins tall, with short, dark, curly hair, and was wearing a white T-shirt and trousers, possibly jeans.
