A man from Enfield was stabbed to death after leaving a bar on the holiday island of Lanzarote.

Neal Parsons, 41, was killed last Wednesday after a heated pub brawl involving a group of Britons and Moroccans spiralled out of control.

It is believed Mr Parsons had been living on the island for a number of months and police say he was looking for work.

The fight is thought to have been sparked by a group of Moroccans men pestering two English women in a bar called Saxo's in the resort of Costa Teguise.

The scuffle spilled out onto the street, and Mr Parsons was knifed outside an apartment block in Avenida Islas Canarias. The alarm is believed to have been raised by a six-year-old girl who witnessed the stabbing.

Sources in Lanzarote said a Moroccan man had also died in hospital yesterday in connection with the same incident.

The fatal altercation left a number of Britons in the group needing hospital treatment including one man who had a glass smashed into his face.

The incident has shaken the island's residents and tourists. An anonymous posting on a Lanzarote internet discussion forum wrote: "I read with horror about this stabbing and have to admit to some surprise it has happened."

Although paramedics rushed to treat Mr Parsons, he was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem showed he died from multiple stab wounds.

A 24-year-old Moroccan man was arrested on Wednesday and is believed to still be in custody in Lanzarote.
