An 89-year-old woman was allegedly battered with an iron in a vicious attack on an estate in Bush Hill Park on Friday morning.

The attack on frail Eva Wakelin, described as a lovely lady' by a neighbour, has shocked the tight-knit community of Hadrian's Ride.

She was taken to hospital following the 11.20am assault. She was treated for head injuries and her condition has been described as serious but stable.

Nicola Bird, one of Ms Wakelin's neighbours and a friend for more than 20 years, was one of the first on the scene after her daughter heard cries of help me, help me' from Ms Wakelin's flat.

She said: "She had blood coming out of her ears and nose and she was coughing up blood. She said she had been hit in the face with an iron.

"I've known her since my daughter was young she's lovely and she would always keep herself to herself."

Ms Wakelin was a member of the Bush Hill Park Salvation Army pensioners' club in Roman Way.

Spokeswoman Major Christine Kilpatrick said: "We are all concerned. She will be in our thoughts and prayers."

The violent attack has sparked more widespread safety fears among residents.

Pat Mackenzie, of Hadrian's Ride, said: "We have had problems around here it's horrible.

"We see the police, and think what is it now?'. The area has got worse."

Sarah Dean, who also lives in Hadrian's Ride, said she was shocked by the attack, and added: "I'm not happy about this and now just keep myself to myself."

A 50-year-old woman has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

She appeared at Enfield Magistrates Court on Monday and was remanded in custody prior to a hearing at Wood Green Crown Court next Monday.
