PROPOSALS for a new Spurs stadium in Edmonton are not “airworthy”, according to a senior councillor.

A meeting was held yesterday afternoon between senior Enfield councillors, discussing the prospect of Tottenham Hotspur relocating to the Meridian Water site off the North Circular.

Councillor Michael Rye (Cons, Town) said yesterday it was a “viable” option and talked up the prospect of the club taking on the site to redevelop White Hart Lane.

But Councillor Bambos Charalambous, who is in charge of leisure and sports in Enfield, rejected the idea after the meeting.

He said: "Mike came in and flew a kite about a stadium which was barely airworthy. There was no proposal from Spurs to consider."

The Labour administration is privately furious with Cllr Rye, according to a council source, for publicly raising the Meridian Water site without holding talks with it first.

The source said: “There was no indication whatsoever that he was speaking about this issue, it was not on the agenda, and the first thing we heard was when the story broke on the Enfield Independent online.”

Cllr Rye believes the site, which has been considered by Spurs in the past, has good transport links, will help boost regeneration in the area and is a credible option for the club.
