HARINGEY Council has denied deliberately having confusing roads signs at a Harringay junction to make money from motorists.

Since April last year, 604 motorists have been fined £60 for turning right from Green Lanes into Warham Road.

Sasha Kaplin and her partner Wayne Hunter are among those issued with a fine – in September - but after successfully challenging the council they have accused it of knowingly retaining confusing signs to “trap” motorists.

But the council is adamant its signs comply with Government guidelines, and say Ms Kaplin's tickets were cancelled because of administrative errors, not because they were issued incorrectly.

The junction has a blue “straight on” sign for southbound motorists but no red “no right turn” sign.

Mr Hunter, who lives with Ms Kaplin in Islington, argues motorists are being confused.

He said: “This is just a money-making scheme, the council is deliberately keeping ambiguous and confusing signs to make money from motorists.

“The way it has handled this case is outrageous, and there must be many other drivers who have fallen into the same trap.”

However, the council defended itself, saying the road signs “make it clear that left and right turns are not permitted”.

Ms Kaplin and Mr Hunter challenged the fact two tickets issued for the same alleged offence, and the council quietly cancelled the second ticket without telling them.

And the day before a scheduled hearing in front of the independent traffic adjudicator PaTAS, the council gave up and accepted the appeal against the other ticket.

The council said it had cancelled the second ticket “as a gesture of goodwill when it was identified that not all correspondence made in connection with the appeal had been fully dealt with”.

Mr Hunter has pledged to keep trying to get the “ludicrous” signage at the junction changed.

But Gary Weston, the council's parking infrastructure manager, told him: “It is my understanding that the signage at this junction is correct and that the ahead only is an alternative to no left and no right turn at this location.”
