Teachers and children at a Wood Green school dressed up as their favourite literary characters for a celebration of books yesterday.

Heartlands High School in Western Road was full of mini-Harry Potters and Willy Wonkas as staff and pupils celebrated World Book Day.

The 15th event, marked in 100 countries around the world, involves giving millions of book tokens to children in a bid to get them reading.

Debbie Duggan, whose 12-year-old daughter Lauren goes to Heartlands, said that she was “amazed” at the effort put in by the staff to put on the event.

She added: “They made such a good go of it and they had such fun – it’s fantastic that all the teachers dressed up as well.”
