ALEXANDRA Palace could be on course to scoop a Love London award after making it to the final in the best sports centre catagory.

The ice rink, in Alexandra Palace Way, is in the running alongside the Aspire Leisure Centre, in Wood Lane, Stanmore, and Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, in Adelaide Road, Swiss Cottage, in a London-wide competition organised by Smooth Radio.

The winner will be announced on Friday, April 24, at Café de Paris in Leicester Square.

The awards were set up to give Londoners a chance to celebrate their hot spots that define the "real" London.

Categories included favourite pubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres.

Rebecca Kane, managing director at Alexandra Palace Trading Ltd, said: "It is a tremendous vote of confidence from people to be receiving one of the awards.

"So many customers were keen to nominate us that we had to photocopy extra voting sheets to meet demand. We have already beaten off much larger leisure facilities from around the capital to receive this accolade, so it really won’t matter to us which of the three awards we receive – our customers have already given us the best result we could hope for."

Alexandra Palace is well-known for its popular ice rink which receives up to 250,000 visitors each year.

Jacob O'Callaghan, member of Save Ally Pally campaign group, said: "Ally Pally’s ice rink is certainly a much-loved facility for 'sk8ers' and a great use of this handsome London landmark — one of the few bits open to all as its Victorian builders intended.

"But unless Haringey Council agrees to essential routine replacement of its worn-out plant, it won’t be for much longer. We hope this also sends a message to them."
