A fire has ravaged the gym of Woodside High School on White Hart Lane, damaging three quarters of the single story building.

The Fire Brigade believe it started in a cage containing gym equipment such as rubber mats, though the cause of the incident is under investigation.

Eye-witness Julie Rickwood, who works in a sports centre opposite the school said: "I saw a lot of smoke so I rang the Fire Brigade. I was worried there were kids in there because there have been holiday clubs running there recently."

The Brigade received a call at 14.02 and the blaze was under control by 16.31. Eight engines and over 40 firefighters from Tottenham, Edmonton, Hornsey and Southgate fire stations attended the incident.

A spokesman for the Fire brigade at the scene said: "There is a lot of smoke damage. Our main concern is the roof, it is a process of ensuring that the fire has not spread across the ceiling."

Formerly White Hart Lane School, Woodside High School changed its name last year in a bid to improve its image.
