NUMBERS of Tottenham pupils winning university places has more than doubled over the past decade, fresh figures reveal.

In 1998, only 345 school leavers applied for higher education compared with 735 in 2009.

The leap represents an increase of 113 per cent, according to data published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

Pupils at sixth forms and colleges in the neighbouring Hornsey and Wood Green constituency also rose by 69.7 per cent, from 440 successful applicants to 645.

It supports a national trend of a boom in graduates from some of the poorest parts of the country.
