A senior Conservative in Haringey is so confident of the party's failure that he has urged people to vote Liberal Democrat.

Justin Hinchcliffe, chairman of the Tottenham Conservatives, has written a letter to voters in the neighbouring constituency of Hornsey & Wood Green asking them to support Lynne Featherstone at the General Election in May.

In the letter, Mr Hinchcliffe asks voters to vote tactically and prevent Ed Miliband from getting ‘one step closer to Downing Street’.

The letter reads: “If Lynne loses in Hornsey & Wood Green, Ed Miliband is another step closer to being Britain’s next Prime Minister. Because in this constituency, if Lynne doesn’t win, Labour will.”

The chairman of the Tottenham Conservatives, referred to as ‘Mr Tottenham’ on his party's website, goes on to say that nobody expects the Tory candidate Suhail Rahuja to win, "least of all himself".

Labour candidate for Hornsey & Wood Green Catherine West said: “While Lynne Featherstone desperately tries to distance herself from the Tories, the leading Conservative in Haringey is personally endorsing her.

“Featherstone has voted with the Tories time after time since 2010 on the NHS, on tuition fees and the bedroom tax. Here’s yet more proof that the Lib Dems and the Tories want to keep their alliance going.

“It’s crystal clear the only way to stop five more years of a Tory government is to vote Labour.”

A Conservative Party spokesman said: "Only a vote for the Conservative Party can ensure a strong and stable government and a better, more secure future for all.

"As the Liberal Democrats begin to fall into line with Labour and the rest, it’s clear that backing them will simply result in the chaos of Ed Miliband as Prime Minister."

Lynne Featherstone’s office has been approached for comment.
