VOLUNTEERS will clear a field and plant trees in Radlett as part of this year’s Mitzvah Day on Sunday November 20.

The event is being organised for the second year running by the Radlett and Bushey Reform Synagogue in Watling Street.

The volunteers will clear the field, opposite the Cat and Fiddle pub in Watling Street, to make room for a new tree nursery.

Organiser Elizabeth Crossick, said: "The parish council have told us they are flabbergasted with how many people got involved last year and how much was done.

"This event is a wonderful example of the big society in a microcosm."

Around 100 people attended last year's event, including Hertsmere MP James Clappison, and their hard work saved Aldenham Parish Council £10,000.

Mitzvah Day, a Jewish-led day of social action, encourages people of all faiths to get involved with community and charity projects by donating time rather than money.

Members of churches, synagogues and temples in the area are expected to attend, with community leaders each saying a non-denomination prayer.

Trees have been donated by local businesses.

Children can also get involved by taking part in a scavenger hunt and litter collection.

They will also be wrapping presents to send to orphanages in the Ukraine and Belarus.

The clear-up will take place between 2pm and 4pm. For more information, email mitzvahday@rbrs.org.uk or office@radlettchurches.org.uk

Journalists at the Borehamwood & Elstree Times are still looking for a worthy cause to help as part of this year’s Mitzvah Day.

Perhaps a community centre needs redecorating, or a green space needs clearing up?
