Community groups will meet next week to discuss how the borough can respond to the Syrian refugee crisis.

The meeting will be hosted by charity Embrace UK and is being supported by Haringey Council.

It will bring together voluntary and community organisations to think about how refugees who arrive in Haringey can best be supported.

Haringey Council leader, Cllr Claire Kober said: “Since news of the current humanitarian crisis broke we have been overwhelmed with messages from people who want to help.

“This meeting is about ensuring that Haringey is prepared to support those affected by this devastating crisis as effectively as possible.”

Alem Gebrehiwot, executive director of Embrace UK said: “We have been shocked by the heart-breaking images and news of Syrian human beings. We are determined to do what we can to help”

This news follows the campaign of a local community centre last month to show Syrian refugees would be welcome in Haringey.

The Selby Centre in Tottenham, run by Sona Mahtani, said that Haringey needed to show it was “diverse borough”.

She said: “People always say one of the positives of working in Haringey is how diverse it is. Now, here is people in need so we want to work with the government and the council to help.”
