HARINGEY Council has been advised to carry out random spot checks on its care providers after a TV report exposed serious failings.

The opposition Liberal Democrat councillors are calling for random assessments after an investigation revealed a number of elderly people are received “poor” care for people in their own homes.

The council cut ties with Sevacare and it has been shut by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Douglas Sager, a former care manager at Haringey Adult Social Services, launched Social Care Alliance Haringey (SCAH) last year after the CQC issued their first report.

Mr Sagar agrees spot checks need to be brought in to make sure vulnerable people are not forgotten about.

He said: “The random checks would be certainly be a good start, as it is alarming.

“I was very angry when I heard about this recent scandal and it just made me more determined to continue our campaign- I am not going to let it go.

“I appreciate that resources are being severely cut at the council however, there it still has a duty of care despite any difficulties it may be having. I feel this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

Cllr Pippa Connor, a Haringey Lib Dem health spokesperson, said the recent reports were worrying and believes more needs to be done to prevent future failings.

She said: "With more care being carried out by private providers, such as Sevacare, there needs to be an independent body to do random spot checks on a regular basis in order to address poor quality care quickly, not just wait for the CQC inspection to identify poor care.

"Haringey Council has a duty to safeguard any vulnerable individual. Those elderly residents who need care and don't know how to complain, or can't complain, about any poor care they receive, are those who need the most protection and support.

“If this is the case, then this is worrying and I would like to see a clear “duty of care” identifying the individualised care each person should receive along with a phone number for an independent body they can complain to if this does not happen."

The Tottenham Independent is awaiting comment from the council.
