“POOR” repair work has caused a pensioner to demand a new home from her housing association.

Audrey Adu, 70, of Nelson Road, Hornsey, moved into her home, owned by L&Q, on July 31, but found it unfinished, with damp floors and “shoddy building work”.

This forced her into staying in a hotel for a week in January while the work was carried out – but when she returned, the problems remained, and have still not been fixed by April.

Ms Adu, whose asthma is irritated so badly by her damp bedroom that she is forced to sleep in her living room, said: “Nobody wants to help me. Maybe it is because I went to the press before, but it is like they want to see me suffer.

“I want to move out, every day there is something wrong, and L&Q have never apologised.

“The stress is causing my asthma to flare up, I am having nosebleeds, for 70 years nothing like this happened, but it all started when I moved in here.”

Ms Adu, who has been put on medication to deal with the stress the house has caused, says she was offered alternative accommodation by L&Q in Muswell Hill.

However, it was on the tenth floor, and Ms Adu walks with a stick and is scared of lifts.

She also said a builder was sent in mid-March to sort her leaks and gutters, but they were unable to get their scaffolding into the back yard to fix it, and have not returned since.

She said: “It is horrible, it is exactly the same as in January: there are rotten door frames in the kitchen, I am laying rugs on the floor to soak up water if it rains.

“There are unpainted, unwallpapered walls in the bathroom and rot in the bedroom – and I have nowhere to go.

“There are too many bad memories here now, I thought I would be happy here but I have to leave.”

L&Q spokesperson Alexander Cater said the repairs to her flat had taken longer than they had expected.

He said: “Our dedicated maintenance team and contractors have now repaired the damp issue, which proved more extensive than was initially thought.

“We are currently liaising with Ms Adu regarding the guttering and waiting for the plaster to fully dry before decorating.

“L&Q is committed to ensuring the happiness and comfort of all our residents and our lettings team will be in touch to discuss transfer options.”
