Haringey Council are planning to build a new headquarters, which could cost up to £33m.

The proposals were included in the draft Capital Strategy programme for one-off projects, which was considered by the cabinet last week.

The council say there is currently unused space in their Wood Green home, and want to make more efficient use of their resources.

So far no timescale or funding has been earmarked for the plans, which would also be built in Wood Green should they go ahead.

According to the council’s website: “The council’s indicative allocation of capital funding to future council headquarters which took account of the type of sites likely to be available, together with their likely cost, and needing to consolidate the workforce to a site that cost less to run in the long term.

“It was important to note that these were indicative figures, for what would happen if the council developed large amounts of council land for much needed housing as part of the regeneration of Wood Green.”

Haringey Council spokesman John Cottrill said: "These are indicative figures for what would happen if we develop large amounts of our land for much needed housing as part of the regeneration of Wood Green, but there is no specific proposal to do this."

The move has drawn criticism from the council’s opponents, who say so much money should not be spent by the council at a time when government enforced cuts are rife.

Cllr Gail Engert, Haringey Liberal Democrats leader, said: “Local people pay one of the highest council tax rates in London and they rightly expect that money to be spent on services and facilities not on plush offices.

“I can’t understand why Labour are even considering spending £33m on this white elephant when that money could be spent on council homes or a leisure centre for Wood Green. It’s really shocking given the widespread cuts.”
