More than three quarters of Haringey voters want Britain to remain in the EU – but the rest of the country may not agree.

The results were announced at Alexandra Palace at around 3.20am on Friday morning, where 75.4 per cent of people whose votes were eligible want to stay – 79,991 out of 106,034 votes.

However, the final result nationally saw the Leave campaign win with 52 per cent of the vote, with David Cameron also announcing he will stand down as prime minister.

Tottenham MP David Lammy, who campaigned passionately for Remain, welcomed the result as a rejection of the risks of Brexit.

He said: “Tonight the people of Haringey have spoken, and it is clear that in this part of our country voters believe that we are better off in the European Union as an outward-looking nation that cooperates with our neighbours.

“From speaking to voters over the past few months I know that for many local people, the risks associated with Brexit were simply too large to countenance  in terms of the impact on local jobs and living standards.

“The results here in Haringey are testament to the hard work of the Remain campaign’s activists - especially Labour members and supporters - who have been out pounding the pavements for months, knocking on doors and speaking to voters.

“The results are also a rejection of the divisive nature of the Leave campaign that sought to drive a wedge between communities and play on prejudices and intolerance”.

Hornsey and Wood Green MP Catherine West, who also campaigned for Remain, has been contacted for comment.
