Jobless count rises again in Haringey

There were 10,514 people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in the borough in June, up from 10,410 in May, and a ten per cent increase on the same point last year.

It is the fifth month running that the figure is above 10,000, the longest run for more than five years.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said that it was important that the private sector continued to grow to encourage businesses to invest and create jobs.

He added: “We do not underestimate the scale of the challenge that we face to help people into employment.

“We always said that the road to recovery would be choppy – for people who lose their jobs our new work programme is now up and running and will offer job seekers flexible support tailored to their needs to help them into employment.”

Figures show that in Tottenham, there are just 121 registered vacancies, with more than 6,000 people looking for work – meaning there are 54 people looking for every job.

Chairman of Haringey's Trades Union Council, Keith Flett, said that meant that “the hard realities” of those trying to find work were at odds with the Government's message.

He said: “The picture is quite similar in neighbouring areas to Tottenham – the Government needs to be on the page of job creation, not job destruction.”

The news comes two weeks after Haringey's political leaders handed a bid to London Mayor Boris Johnson for the east side of the borough to become an Enterprise Zone – that could turn the area into a major economic hub.

The zones – first introduced in March's budget – have up to 100 per cent discounts on business rates, free fast broadband, and relaxed planning restrictions, and are designed for major urban renewal schemes.

Tottenham missed out on the first ten successful applications made in March, but 11 more are due to be announced this summer.

Northumberland Park ward, where the proposed new stadium for Spurs would be, has the highest figure of unemployment in London – more than 633 other wards.
