Students at a Tottenham school are launching a song they have written to improve the national image of their hometown.

Pupils at Gladesmore Community School, in Crowland Road, have written The Song for Tottenham because they were concerned by the negative images of the area that dominated the news during last summer’s riots.

Hundreds of ideas were put forward by students and the song, Everybody Dreams, will be launched in the national music charts in August.

Deputy head teacher, Juliet Coley, said: “The kids really want the news to say something positive about Tottenham.

“After the riots the kids said they wanted to do something about the negative images of the area in the news.

“That is where the idea for the song came from and we are releasing it on the anniversary of the riots so that the media has something positive to report on.”

When the idea was first dreamt up the school put up a post box into which all of the staff and pupils could put their ideas about what should go into the song.

A smaller group of staff and pupils then got together to combine all of the ideas and the song was born.

Auditions were held to choose the lead singers and musicians who will be supported by professional artists such as the guitarist from Westlife.

The song was recorded at the Angel Studios in Islington where the singer and songwriter Adele recorded an album.

The students hope that their lyrics and music will be a winning combination which will give them a top 10 hit when it is released on August 19.

One verse of the song is: “Forget about what you’ve heard, forget about what you’ve seen. We’ve found a place to be, where everybody dreams.”

The song has attracted the interest of local MP David Lammy, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club as well as a number of celebrities including Alan Carr, Glenda Jackson and Alan Partridge all of whom are helping to endorse it.

The Gladesmore students decided that they wanted to use the same tools that promoted the riots to promote the song.

Therefore, it will primarily be advertised on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites.

From August Everybody Dreams will be available to buy on iTunes.
