A popular matchday pub in Tottenham moved one step closer to being saved after campaigners reached their minimum fundraising target to buy the venue.

Supporters of The Antwerp Arms, in Church Street, launched a bid to purchase the public house from the owners after plans were announced to sell it for flats.

The Antwerp Arms Association, which was formed to save the pub, was given until midday today to raise a minimum of £125,000 by the owners to stay in contention to  purchase the pub.

This morning, the group announced it had surpassed the target through the sale of shares in the pub, as well as public donations.

The group has received support from the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust and this week obtained the backing of the club itself.

Now the minimum target has been reached, the campaigners have been given until June 5 to raise a further £125,000 and prove their purchase bid is financially viable.

Former Spurs defender Gary Mabbutt attended the pub this morning to pull a pint and publicise the plight of the campaign.
