Tottenham midfielder Nabil Bentaleb made his debut for Algeria last night and helped his country to a 2-0 victory over Slovenia.

Bentaleb almost scored in his first start for the international side but his shot from the edge of the area in the second half flew narrowly over.

Another Spurs midfielder also enjoyed a successful outing as Paulinho provided an assist for one of Neymar's three goals in Brazil's 5-0 drubbing of South Africa.

Paulinho played the first half of the match while Tottenham defender Bongani Khumalo, who is on loan at Doncaster Rovers, started for the Springboks but had to come off injured.

Hugo Lloris kept a clean sheet as he captained France to a 2-0 home win over Holland.

Gylfi Sigurdsson also played 90 minutes but was unable to prevent Iceland from losing 3-1 to Wales. Former Tottenham winger Gareth Bale scored once and laid on two others in the win.

Jan Vertonghen played 83 minutes for Belgium who threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Ivory Coast.

Andros Townsend came off the bench late on in England's 1-0 victory over Denmark at Wembley while Tom Carroll played a full match for the Under-21s in their 1-0 win over Wales in a UEFA Championship qualifier.
