Spurs favourite Micky Hazard believes his former club cannot continue to let their best players leave if they want to have success.

Last summer saw Gareth Bale join Real Madrid for a world-record fee and in previous summers the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Luka Modric have been allowed to leave White Hart Lane when bigger sides come knocking.

“One of the problems the club has had in recent years is that we’ve let all our best players go,” Hazard told talkSPORT.

With the North London club desperate to taste success, Hazard believes they need to fight harder to hold onto their best players if they are to win silverware.

Following the arrival of Swansea City goalkeeper Michel Vorm, the future of current number one Hugo Lloris has become less clear, with Ligue 1 giants Paris St Germain understood to be keen on the France captain.

But Hazard, who played for Spurs between 1978 and 1985, believes the club's willingness to sell their stars has hampered them.

“If we had been able to keep hold of the likes of Bale, Modric and Berbatov, we could have qualified for the Champions League and maybe even challenged for the Premier League.

“It’s a problem the club has to address, we can’t keep letting our top players go because they always go on to be successful somewhere else.”
