Sevilla defender Federico Fazio looks set to join Tottenham Hotspur after the club reportedly agreed to meet the £8m release clause in his contract.
New Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has shown interest in the player after his bid for Villareal defender Mateo Musacchio failed earlier this month.
Sevilla appeared to confirm the move, with the Spanish club’s sporting director Monchi saying: “It seems that Tottenham is willing to pay the [release] clause.”
Despite the side’s reluctance to lose the centre-back, Monchi stated that the La Liga team simply cannot match Premier League wages.
Argentinean Fazio has made 148 appearances for the club since joining in 2007 and was captain of the side for their Europa League victory earlier this year.
The 27-year-old will be the second Sevilla defender to leave the club for the Premier League in recent weeks following Albert Moreno’s departure to Liverpool.
Sevilla boss Unai Emery expressed his disappointment that Fazio is set to move on.
He said: “Clearly we’d all prefer him to stay, but thinking about tomorrow’s game, we’ll have to look elsewhere. It remains only to wish him well.”
