Quique Sanchez Flores says Watford target Andros Townsend has the characteristics the Hornets are looking for but wouldn't be drawn on the possibility of a deal for the Tottenham Hotspur winger.

We understand the England international is a target for the Golden Boys during the January transfer window.

He is out of favour at Spurs following a public row with the club’s fitness coach, Nathan Gardiner, after victory against Aston Villa at the beginning of November.

The former Watford loanee, who played three times for the Hornets in 2011 before being sent back to Tottenham early due to attitude problems, has been an unused substitute just once since.

Asked ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Southampton whether he would like to bring the winger to Vicarage Road, Flores was coy.

“These are the characteristics we are looking for,” he said. “We have players in the side who can play intelligent football like Almen Abdi, Jose Manuel Jurado and Steven Berghuis.

“But we need skill; players with velocity. We need a balance with these kind of players.

“I don’t like to talk about names but these are the kind of characteristics we are looking for.”
