Jan Vertonghen could be side-lined for up to four months after suffering an ankle injury while training with Belgium.
The 29-year-old Spurs defender is a certainty to miss Marc Wilmots’ side’s Euro 2016 quarter-final against Wales in Lille on Friday.
Unconfirmed reports in Belgium suggested the injury could keep him until October, but the severity of the problem is still unclear.
Having played at left-back throughout Belgium’s campaign, Vertonghen had been expected to shift into centre-back for Friday’s match to cover for the suspended Thomas Vermaelen.
The injury is another blow for Wilmots who now looks set to turn to 21-year-old Jason Denayer as cover, while Jordan Lukaku will fill in at left-back.
