Harry Kane was given the night off for Tottenham’s 2-0 FA Cup Third Round win over Aston Villa after the birth of his first child.

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino revealed the England striker was due to start the cup tie on the bench, but was absent after his wife, Kate, gave birth to a girl early this morning.

Kane broke the news his first daughter, Ivy Jane, had been born shortly after his teammates had seen off a stubborn Villa side at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino said: “It is fantastic for all our family.

“It is better now after 2-0 to explain, he put it on Twitter as it was difficult to keep the news.

“We send from here a big hug to Kate, his wife, because it was a difficult night for her.

"But now it is okay, congratulations for her and of course for Harry, it is a beautiful girl.

“I think Harry was more tired than his wife, his face looked like he was ready to go to sleep.

“He did not come here today because he was still at the hospital, it was all night spent at the hospital waiting and at 7.30 this morning the baby was born.”

Spurs struggled to break the deadlock against their Championship opposition without top scorer Kane, with his replacement, Vincent Janssen, failing to make an impact.

However, Tottenham rallied in the second half and goals from Ben Davies and Hueng-Min Son were enough to book their place in Monday’s Fourth Round draw.
