Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli were on the scoresheet as Tottenham held on to beat Southampton at White Hart Lane.

Spurs were two goals up at half time, before the Saints fought back in the second half, with James Ward Prowse’s goal making for a nervous final half hour.

However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side were able to hold on for their forth win in fives games.

Tottenham were still able to find routes to goal without top scorer Harry Kane, who has been sidelined for four to six weeks with an ankle injury.

Spurs showed minutes into the game they could trouble the visitors despite Kane’s absence, when Son Heung-Min tested Saints keeper Fraser Forster after a good run in behind.

Ten minutes later, Tottenham took the lead through Christian Eriksen, the Dane curling home a low shot from 20 yards out.

Manolo Gabbiadini had scored four goals in his first three league outings for Southampton before today, but was not able to add to his impressive tally.

The Italian striker was given one opening, firing into the side netting from the edge of the box, before coming off with a knock in the first half.

Dusan Tadic passed up a golden opportunity to bring the Saints level on the half-hour mark, ballooning a first-time effort over the bar from six yards.

Spurs went in two goals to the good at the break, after Dele Alli won and then converted a penalty after being brought down by Steven Davis.

But, seven minutes after the restart, the visitors were able to claw their way back into the game courtesy of a goal from Ward-Prowse.

The Englishman was able to turn home Nathan Redmond’s cross after Toby Alderweireld uncharacteristically failed to cut out the delivery.

Vincent Janssen, who scored his first goal for Spurs from open play last weekend, was given a runout in the last 10 minutes and again showed he may be able to chip in with goals in Kane’s absence.

The Dutchman stung Forster’s palms with a powerful shot in the closing minutes.

With an international break on the way, Spurs next game is on April 1, when they will travel to Burnley.
