Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Darren Anderton admits he will miss watching the club play at White Hart Lane.

Spurs played their final match at the stadium last Sunday, beating Manchester United 2-1 to ensure they will finish as Premier League runners up.

That win also means Spurs went undefeated at home in the league for the first time in 52 years.

Speaking to Football Whispers at their FW:2 event last Thursday, Anderton said: “I got invited to the last match at White Hart Lane. I go to the games anyway and do a few of the legends lounges, which is a good thing that Spurs do with a lot of the ex-players.

“I will be emotional because Tottenham was my home. That’s where my career was, where all the best things happened for me, and I think most people associate me with them.

“It’ll definitely be sad because I still get that buzz when I go to White Hart Lane. Now it’s a fortress we’re moving out. It’ll be a tough place to leave.”

Anderton spent 12 years at Tottenham, during which he made more than 300 appearances in all competitions for the north Londoners.

A League Cup winner in 1999, Anderton vividly recalls his first time at White Hart Lane. He told Football Whispers: “I remember signing, going to the stadium and doing the medical, my mum and dad being there, and walking out onto the pitch, looking up and thinking ‘this is daunting'.

“I knew all the players that had played there and what the football club was used to in terms of the type of player they had there. I wanted to be one of those players.”

Anderton is excited about Tottenham’s new ground, which will hold more than 61,000, saying: “I love the fact the new stadium is still on site, so you will still get the same feelings driving to the ground.

“It will certainly feel like a different stadium but a great stadium – it looks frighteningly good.”

He is, however, slightly concerned about the effect that playing home games at Wembley Stadium next season might have on Spurs.

“I loved playing at Wembley,” he said. “I can only imagine as an away player going there you’re going to look forward to it and not be intimidated by it, so it becomes a lot more difficult for the home team.”
