Mauricio Pochettino has said his Tottenham Hotspur team will be out for revenge when they face Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League season.

Spurs will travel to St James’ Park on the 12th August, having endured a miserable afternoon on their previous visit to the North East on the final day of the 2015/16 season.

Pochettino’s men lost 5-1 to the already relegated Magpies on that day, thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat, with the result also meaning Spurs lost second place in the Premier League to bitter rivals Arsenal.

Speaking to Tottenham's website, Pochettino said: “We’re starting to prepare the season and we cannot wait to start again.”

”This is a moment for our players to enjoy their holidays and try to recharge the batteries but for us, we’re thinking about starting the season in the best condition.

“I’m always positive about the fixtures. It’s true, the Premier League is tough and we start in Newcastle, that will be exciting because it’s our first game and then our first game at Wembley is against Chelsea, I’m sure the fans will be excited for that as well.

“Newcastle is another motivation for us. The way that we finished the season before (last) is not too important now but we’ll have that in our mind to motivate us and we’ll try to win.

“Next season will be exciting and to start at St James’ Park will be very motivating for us.”

After facing Newcastle, Spurs then take on reigning Premier League champions Chelsea in their first match at Wembley, before the first month of the season is rounded off by a visit from Sean Dyche’s Burnley.
