Tottenham Hotspur were made to rue a string of guilt-edge chances as they drew 1-1 against bitter rivals Arsenal.

Harry Kane opened the scoring with a cool finish before half time.

The lilywhites had numerous opportunities to put the game to bed but let the Gunners back into the game 13 minutes before the end as Kieran Gibbs squeezed home a half-volley.

Spurs named an unchanged side from the one that swept Aston Villa aside on Monday night.

It was a frenetic start from the North London rivals with both sides counter-attacking but failing to produce the killer pass in the final third.

Eric Dier should have done much better with his chance at the back post after a tantalising cross from Christian Eriksen after 25 minutes.

A good spell for Pochettino’s side was rewarded with the opening goal before the half-hour mark.

A delightful ball over the top from Danny Rose found Kane who beat the offside trap and despatched the ball past Petr Cech with ease.

Spurs were cutting Arsenal open at will and could have easily scored once more if Dele Alli had found the right pass after wriggling free from Francis Coquelin.

Arsenal were limited to just one shot at Hugo Lloris’ goal in the first 45 minutes, a testament to one of the best defensive units in the Premier League.

But the hosts started more positively in the second half.

Joel Campbell cutting inside from the right hand side and forcing Lloris into a good save.

Good play from Eriksen down the right wing almost saw him bag Tottenham’s second as his powerful drive went a whisker wide of the post.

It was end-to-end stuff as Olivier Giroud flicked on Mesut Ozil’s weighted free-kick onto the crossbar.

Somehow the centre forward conspired to miss an even easier chance from just three yards out. Heading the corner just wide.

Eriksen then forced another good save from Cech as Arsenal dawdled on the edge of their own box.

Spurs were in complete control of the derby and really should have put the game to bed once more.

Toby Alderweireld met Erik Lamela’s corner with power but was denied by the inspired Cech.
They would be made to rue their chances.

Kyle Walker was in complete control of any threat Alexis Sanchez provided down the left wing.

However he was caught napping after Gibbs came on and the full-back turned winger was able to convert Ozil’s in swinging cross.

Spurs were finding it difficult to cope with the aerial threat of Giroud and he was able to get his header away once more but it was easy for Lloris.

In the end Pochettino can be proud of his young side’s display and will feel hard done by to just come away with a point.
