Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris’ hopes of winning Euro 2016 in his native France are alive and well after a 2-1 win over the Republic of Ireland.

France trailed in the last 16 encounter to Robbie Brady’s second minute penalty after Shane Long had been felled in the box by a clumsy Paul Pogba.

The hosts appeared encumbered by expectation until the half-time interval as Martin O’Neil’s side enjoyed a composed first 45 minutes.

Things changed considerably after the break though with Antoine Griezmann scoring twice in the space of four minutes to seal a comeback win.

A straight red card for Shane Duffy after he brought down Griezmann as he bore down on goal extinguished any remaining hope of an Irish comeback.

France will now await the outcome of England’s last 16 match with Iceland to see who they will play in the quarter-final on Sunday.

Success for Roy Hodgson’s men will see Lloris come up against Spurs team-mates Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose for a place in the semi-final.

Kane is expected to make a return to the England starting line-up for England’s quarter-final after being replaced by Jamie Vardy in the 0-0 draw with Slovakia.

Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand also look set to make way for Walker and Rose in the full-back positions.
