A much-changed Tottenham recorded an underwhelming victory over Aston Villa in the FA Cup Third Round at White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino only fielded two players from the side that beat Chelsea in imperious fashion midweek, with the likes of Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Christian Eriksen all rested.

The team was a shadow of the one that delivered the memorable 2-0 win over the league leaders, but strikes from Ben Davies and Heung-Min Son were enough to put Spurs through.

The game started slowly, with both sides struggling to find quality in the final third.

Spectators had to wait until the 29th minute to see a shot on goal, and even when it did come, Villa midfielder Leandro Bacuna’s tame effort was easily collected by Michel Vorm.

Spurs found it difficult to break down the hard-working visitors in the opening 45 minutes. The Championship side looked well organised and often defended with six at the back.

Tottenham managed just a single shot before the break. Son latched onto a through ball into the area in the 42nd minute, but his strike took a deflection before looping wide.

The most eye-catching thing on display in the first half were the fluorescent boots sported by Mauricio Pochettino on the sideline, but Spurs did start the second half in brighter fashion.

Son arrived at the right time to meet a cross to the far post in the 52nd minute, but his attempted volley was scuffed towards James Chester, who headed clear.

The South Korean produced Tottenham’s best chance of the game 10 minutes later, when he unleashed a powerful drive from the edge of the box, forcing a good save from Villa keeper Sam Johnstone.

Pochettino was forced to bring in-form Dele Alli off the bench on the hour mark to boost his side’s attacking options.

The England midfielder had an instant impact- quickly teeing up Harry Winks, who produced another fine save from Johnstone.

Spurs finally broke the deadlock after 71 minutes through the unlikeliest of sources.

A good ball from wide by Georges-Kevin Nkoudou, who had been on the pitch a matter of seconds, allowed left back Ben Davies to head home with his back to goal.

Tottenham doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Son grabbed a well-deserved goal to put the game to bed.

Moussa Sissoko did well to outmuscle Jordan Amavi on the edge of the area, before squaring to Son who found the corner of the Villa net with a side-footed finish.

Spurs will turn their attention back to the Premier League next weekend, when West Brom visit White Hart Lane in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off.
