Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino fears Jan Vertonghen could be set for a long spell on the sidelines after he suffered a suspected ankle ligament injury in Spurs’ win over West Brom.

The centre back was carried off an hour into Tottenham’s 4-0 victory over the Baggies at White Hart Lane after rolling his ankle.

Pochettino said Vertonghen would undergo tests early next week to determine the extent of the injury, but early signs suggested it was serious.

The Spurs manager said: “It looks very bad. We feel very disappointed, I think it was a situation that never looked like happening.

“It looks really bad, but we need to wait a little bit, for tomorrow and Monday to assess better.”

The Belgian’s injury marred what was otherwise a good afternoon for Tottenham, as they put in a display of sheer dominance over West Brom.

Harry Kane, who welcomed the birth of his first daughter this week, grabbed a hat-trick, while a Gareth McAuley own goal heaped more misery on the visitors.

Pochettino denied the injury to Vertonghen would force him to dip into the transfer market this month, declaring himself happy with the players at his disposal.

He added: “We will not change our plans.

“You saw in the game Ben Davies can play, Kevin Wimmer is a centre back who played against Aston Villa and Watford and we have Cameron [Carter-Vickers].

“We have plenty of players and enough not to have to move in the market because I do not think we need another centre back.”
