Sergio Aguero will miss the remainder of Manchester City’s season, manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed.

The Argentina striker underwent minor surgery on a troublesome knee injury earlier this week.

The 29-year-old is now being treated in Barcelona under the guidance of specialist Ramon Cugat in the hope of being fit for this summer’s World Cup.

Guardiola said: “It’s four or five weeks but hopefully we’re going to fight to be ready for the World Cup.

“He’ll be ready for next season. He’s in Barcelona now. The first part of the rehabilitation is there.”

Aguero last started a game for City against Chelsea on March 4. He was out of action for a month before returning as a late substitute in the Premier League derby defeat to Manchester United on April 7.

He was hurt further in that game in a controversial challenge from Ashley Young and consequently could not train fully ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool on April 10.

He did come off the bench against the Merseysiders but his problems continued and he has since had keyhole surgery. The lay-off he now requires means he will end the domestic campaign with 30 goals.

He will also have to wait until next season to score his 200th goal for City. His current tally stands on 199.

Argentina begin their World Cup campaign against Iceland on June 16.
