England’s top-order failed again as Pakistan targeted an innings victory in the first NatWest Test at Lord’s.

Joe Root’s half-century could not mask failures from the rest of his side’s top six as the hosts slumped to 104 for five, still 75 short of making Pakistan bat again.

Alastair Cook was lbw to Mohammad Abbas for one and fellow opener Stoneman looked uncomfortable in his 45-ball stay before he was bowled by spinner Shadab Khan having made nine.

Dawid Malan scrapped for 50 deliveries but edged behind to Mohammad Amir, who bowled Jonny Bairstow two balls later.

Ben Stokes hit two early boundaries but was then caught at midwicket off Shadab for nine.

Root was still there on 63, but his team – who were bowled out for 184 after winning the toss on day one – were heading for their sixth defeat in eight Tests.
