Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff upset number four seed Marco Cecchinato to progress to the third round of the Winston-Salem Open.

The 28-year-old, who reached the semi-finals last year, progressed after a comfortable a 6-3 6-4 win over his Italian opponent.

The world number 52 won 72% of his first serve points and saved two break points in the second set to prevail in just over one hour.

Struff will now face number 14 seed Nicolas Jarry in the round of 16 after the Chilean defeated Italy’s Andrea Seppi 6-4 6-3.

Debutant Tennys Sandgren booked his place in the second round, beating Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 6-4 6-3, while wildcard Taylor Fritz got the better of Malek Jaziri 6-1 6-4.

Also through to the second round are American Ryan Harrison, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Leonardo Mayer, of Argentina, who will face Britain’s Kyle Edmund, seeded number three and a wild card this year.

Number six seed Hyeon Chung will complete his second-round match against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on day four after rain halted play during a first-set tiebreaker at 6-6 (5-2).
