He is the latest member of the Premier League 100 club and Harry Kane says a brief spell with Watford helped him become the player he is now.
The Tottenham Hotspur striker scored a stoppage-time penalty in the 2-2 draw with Liverpool yesterday to become the second fastest player to reach a century of top-flight goals.
Kane’s career could have been over before it even got the chance to take flight after being released by Arsenal as a youngster – a moment the 24-year-old now believes was one of the most important things to happen to him.
However, a brief spell with the Hornets followed where Kane took his chance to impress and earned a move to Spurs.
“After Arsenal, I bounced around a bit and went back to play for my local team, and then I was spotted by a scout from Watford who offered me a trial,” he told The Players’ Tribune.
“It’s funny how things work out – as it was after playing for Watford against Tottenham that I got the opportunity to join Tottenham’s youth academy.
“Looking back on it now, it is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me, because it gave me a drive that wasn’t there before.”
That determination to prove his doubters wrong has remained intact, especially when it comes to Spurs north London rivals Arsenal.
“Even back then I had a chip on my shoulder. It might sound ridiculous – I was only eight when they let me go – but every time we played Arsenal, I thought, “Alright, we’ll see who’s right and who’s wrong.”
