Sir - There are still plenty of people who like to help others in this world.

Recently I 'lost' my wife on Shotover. Being disabled I could not walk after her to bring her back. There were half a dozen young men just coming back from a walk.

They had not seen my wife but, without prompting, they offered to walk again to look.

Next a lady with her two dogs and daughter with a mobile (mine was on my desk!) called the Warden Service. She asked people returning from walks if they had see the wandering wife. The warden arrived and did 'circuits of search' - cheerfully and sympathetically.

They contacted police and two cars arrived. One was from Didcot and the other from Thame. They decided on a helicopter as it was now over two hours since my 80-year-old wife had left. All this searching seemed no trouble to the people concerned. And I wish to record my thanks. There's more.

My wife had walked from Shotover over the bypass to an office near the Slade. She asked to borrow the office 'phone to ring home to tell me to come and collect her. Her Alzheimer's had forgotten that I was still on Shotover.

The lady in the office then offered Freddie a lift as she was going through Islip. Hence the quick ride home.

Quite a story but a great indication of how people do love to help each other.
