Celebrate the legend of Guy Fawkes on Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, with the fireworks display at the Royal Gunpowder Mills, Waltham Abbey, when the historic site on the banks of the River Lea hosts a weekend packed full of Guy Fawkes events.

From 2pm families can enjoy the Guy Fawkes Experience which revisits the famous plot to blow up the parliament of the Stuart King, James I. In the setting of the old gunpowder factory the story is told through a short theatre production, while musket firing, science shows, and craft activities enhance the experience.

As darkness falls the venue comes alive with the lights of fairground rides and you can warm up at the café, food stalls, and bar. Both days conclude in a dazzling fireworks display at 7pm from ForceFX, the company behind the special effects of movies, TV, and music festivals.

The Royal Gunpowder Mills dates from the 17th century as a private gunpowder factory. It was bought by the crown in the 18th century to improve production and quality of gunpowder, and later developed new chemical explosives and propellants.

Events manager Lois Bird said: “Guy Fawkes is a fantastic event for everyone. All the exhibitions are open, the children are kept busy with activities and the site’s dramatic history makes it the perfect place to mark the 415th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, with demonstrations of the peaceful use of gunpowder in spectacular fireworks.”
