Harrow Council says its priority during freezing temperatures this winter will be to keep main roads and bus routes clear of snow and ice.

The council held a review of its gritting and snow-clearing policy during the summer after agreeing a new contact with contractor May Gurney, which has invested in a new fleet of gritters.

The council has 2,400 tonnes of salt stockpiled, nearly 1,000 tonnes more than has been used in either of the last two winters.

Portfolio holder for environment, Councillor Phillip O’Dell, said: “We have used the experience of recent years to review our winter plan and refine our service so that we can keep the borough moving.

“However, we cannot be everywhere at once and it is important that we are all prepared and that we all do our bit.

“Whether it’s shovelling snow from the front of your house or salting the pavement in your street, using common sense to improve conditions can make a big difference.”

The authority will grit heavily used footpaths in town centres and train stations but has encouraged others to help out in periods of heavy snow and check on elderly or disabled neighbours.
