A “peaceful” vigil will be held this weekend for Mark Duggan’s family and friends.

It will take place outside Tottenham Police Station, in High Road, at 2pm, and was announced after a meeting between the Metropolitan Police service and Tottenham community leaders, this morning.

The vigil will celebrate the life of the 29-year-old who was killed by an armed police officer in Ferry Lane, Tottenham, on August 4, 2011.

The officer, know only as V53, has claimed that he opened fire in self-defence when he saw Mr Duggan pointing a gun at him.

Yesterday, an inquest jury found that he had been lawfully killed despite also concluding that he was unarmed at when the officer opened fire.

Tottenham MP David Lammy was at the police meeting and said it will was a chance to reflect on the verdict and how to move forward.

He said: “We look forward to a peaceful vigil at the weekend but also to broader issues of police relations and beyond.

“The vigil will allow members of the community to reflect on the loss of Mark Duggan’s life and allow the family to convey their feelings at this moment.”

Cheryl Sealey, the chairman of the Trident Independent Advisory Group, who advises the Met on issues of gang crime in black communities, was also at the meeting.

She said described the meeting as informal but constructive.

Ms Sealey added that it was called to listen to concerns from the community.

Mark Duggan’s family were invited but refused to attend.
