Alexandra Palace train station will be given step-free access thanks to extra government funding announced yesterday.

Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone and Lib Dem councillor Gail Engert joined Baroness Kramer, from the Department of Transport, as the announcement was made.

The station is now set to be step-free and accessible to everyone by 2019.

Station manager Duncan Primrose said: "This is great news for our passengers at Alexandra Palace. We've already refurbished the ticket hall with automatic doors and a ticket office counter suitable for people in wheelchairs and those hard of hearing so this latest announcement will be the icing on the cake, opening up our services to everyone."

Lynne Featherstone, who has been campaigning for accessible local train stations, said:  “In a fair society, rail services should be accessible for everyone – including the elderly, the disabled, and those with heavy bags or pushchairs.”

She added:  “Of course, there are a number of other local stations – both rail and underground – which also need improvements. But this is a great step in the right direction, and hopefully a sign of more to come.”

Councillor Gail Engert, the Lib Dem transport spokesman, said the investment was “great news”.

She said:  “Making the station more accessible will mean people with mobility problems, older people, parents with prams and people with luggage can use the station much more easily.

"The Liberal Democrats will continue to push for more stations in Haringey to be made accessible for all residents.”

The cash will come from an extra £60 million granted to the ‘Access for All’ programme in the Autumn statement.
