A children’s clothes swap shop has been launched to offer parents an opportunity to replace outgrown garments with pre-loved ones for their little ones.

Street Store was unveiled last week at Walthamstow Toy Library in Ravenswood Road by environmental charity Hubbub.

The pop-up shop which will run throughout the winter months, aims to reduce costs for families with young children and cut down on clothing waste.

Mother-of-one Katie who lives in Walthamstow with her daughter Poppy recently visited Street Store to fish out a bargain.

She said: “I think the Street Store is a really great idea. It was a great chance to have a clear out of her wardrobe and bring in some of the things that don’t fit her anymore and take home something new.”

Parents are encouraged to bring in items of clothing for newborns to seven-year-olds which they no longer need and exchange them for other items in good condition.

There will be a recycle bin on site for any items which are too worn.

Visitors can also pick up tips on how to care for clothing so that their favourite pieces can be enjoyed for longer.

Trewin Restorick, CEO of Hubbub, said: “Being a parent of young children can seem like a never ending cycle of clearing out last season’s outgrown clothes and restocking the wardrobe.

“This can become very expensive and it can be a hassle working out what to do with unwanted items.

“By creating Street Store we aim to provide a one-stop solution for parents, where they can restock whilst creating space.

“Not only that, but they can do it while the children play and there’s of course the added benefit of knowing that they are reducing waste and giving loved clothes a second life.”

Each year, approximately 300,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in landfill in the UK.

Helen Crockford, director of Walthamstow Toy Library, said she and her team are “passionate about the environment and reducing waste” so naturally they jumped at the chance to welcome Street Store.

Ms Crockford added: “We all know children usually hate clothes shopping so it’s great to be able to offer parents the chance to browse in a relaxed setting.”

Street Store will be open from 9.30am to 3pm from Monday to Friday and from 10am to 12pm on Saturday. The project is being funded by North London Waste Authority (NLWA).
