In September, the council was urged to take urgent action to stem the decline in Enfield Town. The Tories blamed the Labour-run council’s policies for contributing to a rise in the number of empty shops and called for them to scrap hikes in parking charges and consider reforming business rates. But members of the Labour group claimed the central government’s austerity measures were responsible for the downturn.

Residents vowed to fight plans for a major regeneration project amid fears it could lead to ethnic minorities being pushed out of Haringey. Councillors urged local people to lodge planning objections against developer Argent Related’s proposals for six tower blocks of up to 38 storeys in Tottenham Hale. The plans were attacked over their lack of affordable housing.

Concerns were raised after human bones were discovered at Tottenham Park Cemetery in Edmonton. Bereaved family members were shocked to find unburied bones strewn around the cemetery. A human jawbone and vertebra had previously been found at the cemetery.
