Watford Borough Council said it acted “swiftly” to save a town centre market as July began after it emerged the operators were in financial difficulties.

The council took over the running of New Watford Market after Telford-based Town and Country Markets suffered an “act of insolvency”.

But the future of the market was uncertain as the council said it could only run it for the short term.

A man spent five hours on a bridge over the M25 during a police stand off.

Dayle Smith, of Bingham Close, Hemel Hempstead, pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance.

Police tried to coax the 30-year-old down from the bridge when they arrived at the scene at 4.05pm - but he did not move until around 9pm.

Florin Ghinea was arrested by armed officers from the National Crime Agency as he left a gym in Watford on Tuesday.
