NHS workers in East London have been celebrated as heroes in an awards ceremony.

In this year's Barts Health Heroes awards, Whipps Cross Hospital children's Acorn ward, Emergency Department and Lister Ward were praised.

The Emergency Department came highly commended in the engaging awards category.

The Lister Ward team were named winners in the welcoming category.

The hospital managing director Alan Gurney said: "I am extremely proud of our staff at Whipps Cross Hospital who were nominated for a Barts Health Hero Award. It was a fantastic evening to recognise and celebrate all the hard work and dedication we see every day across the hospital for our patients."

The winning teams and individuals were chosen from 1069 nominations by a panel of staff, patients and partners.

Barts Health NHS Trust chief executive Alwen Williams said: "I extend congratulations to everyone nominated in this year's awards. Thank you for everything you do to give excellent care. My thanks also go to colleagues and partners including Barts Charity for your unstinting support. This week shows that we are delivering a fantastic range of improvements for local people; we should be very proud."

Each individual winner received £500 and teams received £1000, as well as a certificate and an invitation to a celebratory lunch hosted by Mr Peters, all sponsored by Barts Charity.

Chair Ian Peters said: "This year we have seen a record 1,069 nominations - almost twice received last year. It speaks volumes about the incredible feats that you make happen every day at Barts Health. Thank you all for everything you do."
